Oakland County Launches #OakAlert: Emergency Alert System

It’s almost impossible to detect when an emergency is going to happen. But that doesn’t mean we can’t take a proactive approach to handling emergency situations.

This week, we announced the launch of OakAlertOakland County’s electronic alert system that enables and empowers the public to be aware of extreme incidents in Oakland County. This FREE service is geared towards providing accurate and helpful information to concerned citizens, businesses, and governmental agencies.oakalert-ipad

So whether you’re a resident in Oakland County, or own or work at a business in our community, we want you to be prepared. By signing up for OakAlert, you will receive e-mail or text message alerts (or if you want, both!) that will warn you of extreme emergency situations, such as imminent or perceived threats to life or property, disaster notifications, evacuation notices, public health emergencies, and public safety emergencies. When you sign up for OakAlert, your information will be kept confidential and will not be released to any third party.

oakalert-iphoneOakAlert is completely voluntary and, due to the nature of the alerts, will likely be infrequent and used on an as-needed basis. Examples of alerts include chemical spills, outdoor warning siren activation, active shooter situations that require evacuation or Shelter-In-Place orders, significant road closures, and closures or interruption in service of county operations.

Once a message is received through the OakAlert system, additional information will be broadcast through the media and NOAA radios. Additionally, OakAlert will not be used for notifications of non-emergency situations. If you would like to stay updated on non-emergency news and information from Oakland County, you can sign up for our free digital subscription service HERE.
