Nature Education Programs Offered by Oakland County Parks

Screentime is an inevitable part of life now, but taking time to unplug and surround yourself with green space is a great solution to combat overstimulation and stress. And a wonderful way to embrace nature.

Studies show that time spent outside can reduce anxiety, improve attention span, mood, and even our empathy. When we connect with the plants and animals around us and learn about their amazing adaptations and qualities, we often feel a greater appreciation and connection to the planet.

Oakland County Parks’ two nature centers offer a variety of experiences and programs designed to get people of all ages excited about the planet’s plants and animals.

  • The Trailblazers Hiking Series, an opportunity to take a 1-mile scenic hike with parks staff to explore a variety of nature-related topics. From learning about urban nature to nocturnal mammals, the Trailblazers series is a great opportunity to discover something new in the Oakland County Parks. For more information about the Trailblazers Hiking Series, check out our website.
  • Nature education programs, interactive displays, and other unique exhibits at Red Oaks and Wint Nature Centers take visitors on a tour through Michigan’s natural history.
  • Early Childhood Hour Out (ECHO) at Wint Nature Center is a great way to get your little ones interested in nature! Parents, grandparents, or nannies are welcome to bring their littles ones for an hour of caregiver-guided activities at the nature center. You and your kids will have the chance to make new friends, learn about new topics, and enjoy the outdoors.

Learning about the natural world is incredibly beneficial. From boosting your mood to fostering excitement about natural sciences and conservation efforts, time outdoors can make us feel connected and inspired.
