Travel Smart This Summer: How to Spot and Avoid Fake Travel Apps and Scams

Summer travel is in full swing, and so are online scams. As more people turn to the internet to book flights, hotels, and vacation packages, cybercriminals are creating fake apps and websites that can steal personal and financial information.

These scams can lead to stolen data, spyware infections, and phishing attacks. Here’s how to protect yourself when planning your next trip.

The Growing Threat: Fake Travel Apps and Websites

Scammers create apps and websites that closely mimic legitimate airlines, hotel chains, and travel services. These fakes often look polished, promise incredible deals, or claim to simplify your travel plans.

In reality, fake travel apps may:

  • Steal credit card or login credentials
  • Install spyware on your device
  • Deliver phishing messages to collect more personal data

Brilliance Security Magazine has identified fake travel apps and websites as a leading cyber threat this summer, urging travelers to remain cautious when downloading or booking online.

The Risk: Identity Theft and Financial Loss

Falling for one of these scams can have serious consequences. Fake travel platforms can expose your credit card number, passport details, or other sensitive information. Some apps may install spyware to collect your information.

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has warned consumers about fraudulent travel websites that may appear high in search results or be linked through phishing emails. These sites often offer fake deals on flights or vacation rentals. Once you pay, your money and booking vanish.

In a recent alert, the FTC shared reports from travelers who unknowingly used scam sites that seemed legitimate at first glance.

How to Stay Safe When Booking Travel

You can still book travel safely online by following these key tips:

  1. Only Download Apps from Trusted Sources
Use the Google Play Store or Apple App Store when installing travel apps. These platforms screen for security issues. Avoid downloading apps from links in emails, texts, or social media.
  2. Verify the App’s Authenticity
Fake apps often resemble real ones but with subtle differences. Check that the name, icon, and screenshots match what you expect. Look at the number of downloads. Legitimate apps typically have thousands or even millions. Check for negative reviews. Recurring complaints like “app won’t open,” “asks for credit card info right away,” or “this is a scam” are major red flags.
  3. Double-Check Website URLs
Scam sites often use slight misspellings or odd characters in the web address. It is safer to type the official website directly into your browser instead of clicking through ads or emails.
  4. Be Skeptical of Too-Good-to-Be-True Deals
Extreme discounts or last-minute luxury offers can be a bait. Cross-check any deal with the official travel provider’s website.
  5. Use a Credit Card for Payments
Credit cards offer better protection against fraud than debit cards or wire transfers. If something seems off, like a sketchy payment process or a website that looks outdated, take a moment to double-check before proceeding.

Report Travel Scams Immediately

If you or someone you know is affected by a travel scam, file a complaint with the FTC at ReportFraud.ftc.gov. Also notify your credit card company or bank to dispute charges and protect your account.

Final Thoughts

Fake travel apps and websites can be deceiving, especially when planning in a hurry. By using trusted sources and staying alert, you can avoid scams and focus on enjoying your vacation.
