First Tee of Spring at Oakland County Parks Golf Courses

Tom Hughes, Chief of Park Operations and Maintenance for Oakland County Parks, will tell you that one of the best parts of spring is the early golf season and all the little things that come with it.

“For many golfers, being able to play golf is its own season,” Hughes said. “Golfers are not only thrilled about playing again but excited to reconnect with fellow players and show off what all that off-season practice has done to improve their game.”

At Oakland County Parks, we get to experience that joy as we open our golf courses for play on April 1, weather permitting. OCP takes pride in providing an excellent experience for guests and maintaining beautiful, scenic golf courses that keep play affordable and available to everyone looking to golf.

Glen Oaks, Lyon Oaks, Springfield Oaks and White Lake Oaks golf courses are 18-hole courses, while Red Oaks is home to a 9-hole executive course perfect for a quick game.

Lyon Oaks also has a driving range, and White Lake Oaks boasts electronic golf bikes that are a big hit with the guests. Glen Oaks was one of the first golf courses to install hitting nets, and they’re adding a third this season with a permanent cement pad. Red Oaks has warm-up hitting nets, too.

They all offer different and challenging courses with views that highlight the very best of Oakland County’s natural features. And the chance to get outside to take in some sunlight and fresh air is why the early season is so exhilarating.

“After being stuck indoors for months during an extremely long and cold winter, they’re excited to finally get outside and enjoy that first round of the season,” said Hughes.

And that includes the younger set. Junior rates will continue at the courses this year, allowing those 17 and younger to play nine holes for $10 and 18 holes for $15 Monday through Friday and weekend afternoons. Juniors can ride free with a paid adult during those times.

“These rates make it easier for junior golfers to learn the fundamentals of golf and practice their skills on a regular basis,” Hughes said, discounted rates are also available for seniors age 62+, individuals with disabilities and veterans and active military personnel.
