Last month, Oakland County Water Resources Commissioner Jim Nash announced that Oakland County residents who are struggling with paying their water bills and meeting other water-related needs due to a temporary hardship now have a new resource to avoid shutoffs, fix leaks and ensure access to affordable water.
Financial distress can have devastating effects on individuals and families, including the loss of jobs, homes, cars, retirement accounts, personal belongings and savings. Stress can have a detrimental effect on mental and physical health as well.
The Hardship Assistance Program is a dedicated initiative to provide temporary relief and support through water bill assistance to individuals or families experiencing financial or personal hardships who don’t meet the requirements of existing low-income water bill programs. People with household incomes of $93,600 for a family of four, $61,320 for a couple and $45,180 for an individual are encouraged to apply.
The program is available to all Oakland County residents using municipal water and/or sewer services. Benefits are provided on a first-come, first-served basis with an initial household cap of $2,000. Hardship Assistance Program benefits can include:
- Plumbing repairs to address water loss contributing to increased usage.
- Bill assistance for up to three months of water and/or sewer services.
- Help with eliminating past-due balances.
