Chefs Share Tips, Recipes During Oakland County Farmers Market Series

Learning how to incorporate healthy vegetables into winter meals can be a challenge. But this winter and spring, you can learn from some of the best culinary experts at the Oakland County Farmers Market!

Each of the five remaining Cooking with edibleWOW demonstrations at the Oakland County Farmers Market features a local chef preparing a recipe with ingredients readily available during the winter months, such as root vegetables, mushrooms, honey, garlic, onions, and apples.

“The cooking demonstrations are very popular with our guests,” Market Manager Brad Wethy said. “Many enjoy how chefs prepare recipes highlighting various regions of the country and diverse cultures so they can create new, exciting experiences at home.”

A collaboration with edibleWOW magazine, each cooking demonstration highlights a different chef, who brings their unique culinary experiences to the table. Chefs not only share delicious recipes, but also handy tips and tricks that home cooks can use when preparing meals for family and friends.

The 2024 series kicked off with Chef Frank Turner from Citizens Provisions on Jan. 27. In addition to Turner, the 2024 lineup includes:

  • Feb. 10 – Chef Anthony Lombardo, SheWolf Pastificio & Bar
  • Feb. 24 – Chef Allie Lyttle, LaLa’s Too
  • March 9 – Chef James Kokenyesdi, Michigan Chefs de Cuisine Association
  • March 23 – Chef Souri Gaillard, Bowers School Farm
  • April 13 – Chef Amanda Saab, Amanda’s Plate

Each cooking demonstration runs from 10-11 a.m. at the Oakland County Farmers Market, 2350 Pontiac Lake Road in Waterford. They are designed to be interactive with chefs answering questions from the audience as they prepare their dishes.

With printed copies of the recipes available during the program, guests can watch a chef prepare a dish and then purchase the ingredients they need from market vendors. Chef biographies and recipes are also posted at OaklandCountyParks.com/FarmersMarket following each cooking demonstration.

“Some people struggle to find inspiration for healthy meals that use seasonal ingredients during the winter months,” Wethy said. “This is a good way to get out of a rut, explore new produce varieties and challenge yourself to cook with local ingredients all year long. Mark your calendars for this fun and informative programming.”

No preregistration is necessary. Winter hours at the Oakland County Farmers Market are 7 a.m.-1:30 p.m. Saturdays only. For details, call 248-858-5495.
