Health and Wellness at the Oakland County Farmers Market

Health and wellness.

It’s one of the four Core Values of Oakland County Parks (OCP), and the Oakland County Farmers Market plays a major role in the mission to bring fitness, wellness activities and wholesome nutrition to all residents.

The market is operated by OCP to make grower-direct fresh produce, flowers and artisan goods accessible year-round. Vendors from across the state – some as far as the Upper Peninsula – bring their freshly-picked wares to the award-winning market each morning it is open.

Shoppers can find locally grown vegetables, fruits, flowers as well as baked goods, crafts, seasonal outdoor decor and more.

Lots of guests like to make a day of their visit, stopping for a bite at the Red Wood Grill.

But shopping is just one of the things guests enjoy about the Oakland County Farmers Market. Special events are hosted in and outside of the main facility throughout the year, like the popular Community Garage Sale, Spring Flower Days, Holiday Market events, professional cooking demonstrations and so much more.

Gleaners Community Food Bank hosts several drive-up food distribution days at the market throughout the year, and the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office uses the market’s parking lot for its community document shredding events.

Furthering OCP’s wellness efforts, the market partners with Waterford-based Studio 8 Fitness and Healthy Oakland Partnership to offer free yoga and tai chi classes on the first Saturday morning of every month from May through September on the market’s nearby green space. Yoga classes are also offered throughout the summer on Thursday afternoons. The Lunchtime Yoga Series gives participants the chance to take a pause in their workday to get some fresh air and mindfulness.

Though market products are available as growing conditions permit and supplies last and, visitors are encouraged to check out the market’s Facebook page for weekly updates from Market Manager Brad Wethy. There you’ll see new seasonal items and upcoming events. You can also reference the handy seasonal produce guide available online on the Oakland County Farmers Market web page.

Entry to the Oakland County Farmers Market is always free, and is open from 7 a.m. – 1:30 p.m. Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays through the end of December. Hours are limited during winter months. For more information, visit OaklandCountyParks.com.

The Oakland County Farmers Market is located at 2350 Pontiac Lake Road in Waterford.
