Oakland County, It’s Time to Renew your Dog License!

It's time to renew your dog license. 2022 licenses now available.

Your furry friend needs a license, and now is the time to purchase or renew one for them. Michigan law requires all dogs four months of age and older to have a current dog license. Both one-year and three-year licenses are available for renewal or purchase at the Oakland County Animal Shelter and Pet Adoption Center.

Five Reasons Why Your Pets Need to be Licensed

  1. It’s the law since 1919
  2. Licensed pets that go missing have a better chance of being found
  3. It proves your ownership
  4. It indicates that your pets’ rabies shots are up-to-date
  5. Fees go toward the support of the Oakland County Pet Adoption Center

The Oakland County Animal Shelter and Pet Adoption Center allows you to renew or purchase either a one-year or three-year license. In order to purchase a three-year dog license, your pet’s rabies vaccination expiration date must coincide with the date of the dog license. For example, in the year 2021, a three-year dog license will have a year of 2023 (three years out). If you wish to purchase a three-year dog license in 2022, then your dog’s rabies vaccination expiration date must run through 2024.

  1. The current NEW fee increase on Dog License is Ridiculous. Or Course Oakland County must have the HIGHEST fees possible??

  2. Why, if I were to buy a puppy who turns 4 months after June 1, do I have to pay a delinquent fee?

  3. My dog’s leash was mistakenly hooked up to his tag ring and he pulled it off in the snow. We have not been able to find the tag. How do I get a replacement tag?

    • Hi, Nancy! We recommend contacting the Oakland County Animal Control & Pet Adoption Center at 248-858-4647 for assistance. Thank you!
