Earth Day: Celebrate and Protect Our World

Every April 22 marks the anniversary of the beginning of the environmental movement in 1970. Inspired by student anti-war protests and concerned by environmental pollution, U.S. Sen. Gaylord Nelson Wisconsin tapped U.S. Rep. Pete McCloskey California to co-chair a movement for teach-ins on college campuses. They enlisted the help of activist Dennis Hayes, to organize the teach-ins. He also formed a national network to promote similar events. The first Earth Day moved 20 million Americans to peacefully protest the environment’s deterioration.

Let Oakland County’s NoHaz Collection team help you safely dispose of household hazardous materials ranging from pesticides, paints, air fresheners, propane cylinders, cleaning solutions, prescription medicines, and more.

You’d be surprised just how many everyday items are considered hazardous waste. Many of the objects that help us in our daily lives become dangerous when disposed of alongside regular rubbish. Do you have an item you’re unsure about? View lists of accepted and non-accepted materials in the FAQ section of Advantage Oakland’s NoHaz web page, or call the NoHaz Hotline at 248-858-5656.

Happy Earth Day, Oakland County!

Happy Earth Day! Oakland County seeks to protect the environment, reduce carbon pollution, keep our water and lakes safe, and conserve natural resources. Earth Day should not just be celebrated on April 22 — it should be an everyday fight for the climate.

Oakland County Executive Dave Coulter and Oakland County Environmental Sustainability Officer Erin Quetell recently sat down at the Oakland County International Airport, the first general aviation terminal in the United States to be LEED certified, to chat about:

  • What is happening on our county government campus to work toward a goal of achieving carbon neutrality by 2030, and county-wide by 2050.
  • What we can do every day to help our environment, our neighborhoods, and our communities.
  • How the environmental sustainability objectives connect with the other goals of the county.
