The Oakland SAVES Story Map: Witnessing the Impact of Energy Efficiency

Energy efficiency is an option that covers all three pillars of sustainability – environmental, social and economic. Investments in energy efficiency can reduce greenhouse gas emissions, alleviate high energy burdens, and create skilled trade jobs and household savings that flow back into the economy. In celebration of Earth Day, Oakland County is highlighting the benefits of an impactful energy efficiency program, Oakland SAVES

In 2024, the Oakland County Office of Sustainability partnered with Michigan Saves to run an energy efficiency program called Oakland SAVES, which provided energy efficiency upgrades to almost 1,100 households throughout the county. These upgrades delivered comfort, resilience, and reliability for residents, all while reducing greenhouse gas emissions and monthly utility bills. Additionally, Oakland SAVES generated more than $7.7 million in work for local contractors.

Throughout the program administration, Oakland County heard many stories of how life-changing this investment was for participants and their communities. The sustainability office created a Story Map detailing the impact of Oakland SAVES, including:

  • Testimonials from participants
  • A map of completed jobs throughout the county
  • An analysis of the environmental, social and economic benefits of this community investment
