WILDER SIDE OF OAKLAND COUNTY

Three weeks have raced by since the position of Planet Earth in relation to the sun signaled the autumn equinox; except during much of this week, we have been bathed in sultry summer-style heat with the mercury soaring into the 80s. Some of nature’s creatures became briefly “confused” and were stirred into off-season activity, with spring peepers sounding off from the edge of wetlands and well camouflaged gray treefrogs calling from moist foliage. A walk in the woods to the edge of my marsh reminded me of the timeless words of John Muir, “The clearest way into the Universe is through a forest wilderness” and got me thinking. Help Oakland County Monitor Lake Water Quality this Summer

We’re deep in the throes of winter, but we can certainly dream about summer! When your county is home to over 100 lakes, there’s nothing that compares to a Michigan summer on the water. We all want to keep Oakland County lakes clean for swimmers, boaters, water skiers, fish, and wildlife and you can help by volunteering for the Cooperative Lakes Monitoring Program (CLMP). The CLMP, which is working in partnership with the Oakland County Board of Commissioners, Oakland County Health Division, and Michigan Clean Water Corps (MiCorps), needs volunteers like you to help monitor and protect the health of our beautiful local lakes.

“We are excited to partner with the Cooperative Lakes Monitoring Program to provide residents with valuable resources to monitor the health of our lakes,” said Board Chairman Michael J. Gingell. “Together we can help preserve and protect hundreds of lakes across Oakland County for generations to come.” Continue reading →

The next best thing to the Fall colors Up North? Fall in Oakland County! With more than 65 miles of parks and trails, there is plenty of autumn leaves to crunch through, and activities for everyone. Oakland County consists of 910 square miles of cities, watersheds, lakes, golf courses, homes, schools, and so much more. It is the premier place to live, work, play, and raise a family.
