Oakland County equestrian enthusiasts of all abilities, from beginners to professionals, can find a number of local resources to support their love of horses. Oakland County is just the place with more than 40 locations for boarding, training, lessons, equine therapy, or group outings. Several stables and ranches are located in and around the county; see the list below to learn more.

Pageantry and Excitement at the Hazel Park Raceway

The Hazel Park Raceway was awash in colorful sun hats as hundreds of spectators gathered to watch “the most exciting two minutes in sports.” The tenor and costume of the raceway crowd evoked the grandeur of Churchill Downs as they anticipated the 143rd running of the Kentucky Derby last Saturday, May 6th.

The event spanned three clubhouse floors, an outdoor barbecue, and the raceway’s grandstand. Race goers milled about, snacking on nachos or hot dogs while murmuring about the odds in the upcoming race. As coverage of the Kentucky Derby intensified on television, the throngs condensed around the raceway’s simulcast displays.

Maybury State Park: A Trail Tale of Two County Connectivity

Don’t wait for spring warmth to get your boots on a trail. Some of the very best trails are almost in our backyards, and others are just over the county line. Busy Eight Mile Road is the dividing line between Novi in southernmost Oakland County, and Northville in northernmost Wayne County, and that’s where you’ll find Maybury State Park. The park is without question one of the most popular Michigan State Parks in southeast Michigan. This 940-acre park, managed by the Michigan Department of Natural Resources, is located entirely on the Wayne County side of Eight Mile Road, but by this summer, access by foot or by bicycle for Oakland County residents will be a lot easier, and much safer. An early morning walk through this 640 acre protected wildland in the northwest corner of Oakland County at the dawn of December offers rich rewards, reaching beyond the obvious benefits of healthy hiking and fresh air. Solitude, natural beauty, and a chance to embrace silence without distractions are three of them. The radiant glow of morning sunlight on trees enriches forest stillness, and warms the human spirit.
