Mental Health

It has never been more important than now to recognize the role mental health plays in our overall well-being and help those in need receive support. When living with a mental health condition or facing a mental health concern, it’s common to feel like no one understands what you’re going through. However, many people live healthy lives after seeking help for the mental health challenges they face. You aren’t alone; help is out there, and recovery is possible.

Oakland County Recognizes the Importance of Mental Health

Even before the outbreak of COVID-19, the number of Americans living with mental health issues was at a crisis level. That’s why Oakland County has invested nearly $13 million in various services.

The county has allocated $8.5 million in grants, administered by the United Way for Southeastern Michigan, to non-profit agencies to help an additional 66,000 residents with critical counseling and care. Another $2 million is helping hospitals quickly evaluate people in their emergency rooms and get them the care they need.

An additional $2 million went to support students when the county established the Mental Health and Wellbeing School Partnership Program. In this program, health navigators work directly with Oakland County school professionals to increase mental health services—providing a safety net beyond the resources available at their local schools.

Oakland County works to ensure access to quality affordable health care, including mental health services, to improve health outcomes for all residents as part of the Healthy Residents goal in our Strategic Framework. Visit our dashboard to see the progress made to the mental health of community members, as measured by the percentage of young people who felt sad or hopeless at a given time.
