The Local Gems Sweepstakes returns this year from Nov. 1 to Nov. 30, with a kickoff at Andy’s Place in downtown Holly. The contest invites Michigan residents to promote small businesses in Oakland County by submitting selfies taken at businesses they recognize as local gems, each for a chance to win $1,000, $500 or $250.
“Small businesses are the heart of our communities, creating local jobs, supporting families and giving our downtowns their unique character,” said Oakland County Executive Dave Coulter. “The Local Gems Sweepstakes is a fun way to encourage residents to discover new favorites and keep more of their spending in our communities this holiday season.”
The campaign is organized by Oakland County Economic Development, in partnership with Genisys Credit Union, Main Street Oakland County and Oakland Thrive. Since its creation, the Local Gems Sweepstakes has helped boost local shopping and spotlight small businesses that define the county’s diverse and vibrant economy.

In 2025, Lily’s Seafood in Royal Oak received the most entries, followed by Vibrant Vizionz in Oak Park, All About Women’s Health Boutique in Farmington, Havana Tacos & Burgers in Southfield and Lake Orion Bike & Adventure in Lake Orion.
How to Enter
- Explore independently owned brick-and-mortar small businesses in Oakland County.
- Take a selfie inside or outside the business.
- Upload the selfie at OaklandCountyMI.gov/ShopSmall.
To increase your odds of winning, you can enter up to 10 selfies, one selfie per different business. The winners will be chosen randomly. The prizes will be awarded during a special check presentation Wednesday, Dec. 16, at a location to be announced the first week of December, with the winners (or their representatives) in attendance.
Rules
No purchase is necessary to enter or win a prize. Participants must be Michigan residents and at least 18 years old. Employees and subcontractors of Oakland County and Genisys Credit Union are not eligible.
