People have been throwing tin lids and flying discs at targets for decades. Disc golf officially became a sport in 1976 through the efforts of “Steady” Ed Headrick, the inventor of the modern-day Frisbee and founder of the Disc Golf Association.
As in golf, the goal of disc golf is to reach the target in the fewest drives. Wherever the disc lands, the next throw is made until the disc hits the chains or rests in the basket. Like golf clubs, discs are created in different shapes and sizes for specific purposes — speed, glide and stability.
Disc golf is a fun activity for people of all ages, abilities and fitness levels. Oakland County residents can take advantage of the numerous nine- and 18-hole disc golf courses throughout the county, so grab some discs and find a course near you!
Practice throwing, learn the rules of play, discover the different styles of baskets and discs and find more on the DGA website.
