While college students and park-goers have been throwing tin lids and flying discs at targets for decades, disc golf became an official sport in 1976. “Steady” Ed Headrick, inventor of the modern-day Frisbee, founded the first disc golf company, the Disc Golf Association (DGA).
Similar to golf, the goal of disc golf is to reach the target/basket in the fewest amount of throws. Disc golf is designed to be a fun activity for people of all ages, abilities and fitness levels. Oakland County residents can take advantage of the numerous 9- and 18-hole disc golf courses throughout the county, so grab a disc and find a course near you!
Verify registration, hours, locations and the weather forecast before heading out. Updated 7/3/2025.
Practice throwing golf discs, learn the rules of play, discover the different styles of baskets and discs, and more from the DGA.
