Everything You Need to Plan the Perfect Picnic

Whether you’re enjoying a sunny afternoon at the playground, spending time with friends and family at Addison Oaks or Groveland Oaks campgrounds or simply exploring the trails, a picnic is the perfect opportunity to connect with each other and refuel your body for more outdoor adventures.

The key to a memorable picnic is in the planning. Review the tips below to create a stress-free, fun and delicious picnic experience this summer.

Location, location, location

When choosing a picnic spot, there are several factors to consider:

  • The proximity to amenities. If you have young children, for example, you probably want to be close to a restroom facility or a playground area so you can set up or finish cleaning up while keeping an eye on them as they play. See this map of Oakland County playground locations for more information.
  • The view. There are many spectacular settings for a picnic. Consider if you want to be in an area shaded by trees, next to a peaceful lake or in a quiet place where you can read or observe birds and wildlife.
  • Nearby activities. The fun doesn’t have to stop so you can take a break to eat. Plan your picnic at the beach at Independence Oaks or Groveland Oaks County Park & Campground, outside Red Oaks or Wint nature centers or near your favorite fishing spot. Red Oaks Waterpark allows guests to bring in food and beverages, but no glass containers or bottles, please.
  • The size of your group. For small get-togethers or outdoor celebrations, consider renting a picnic pavilion. Many parks offer affordable rates, and some pavilions come with outdoor grills, sand volleyball, horseshoe pits and other amenities reserved just for your group.
  • The menu. Sandwiches are great picnic fare, but if you’re planning to serve hot dogs or other cooked food, check into a site with a grill or fire pit.

Pack the Essentials

Make sure you have everything you need to be comfortable during your meal. Here’s a checklist to get you started:

  • Tablecloth or large blanket
  • Plates, napkins and utensils
  • Cups or water bottles
  • Cooler or insulated bag with ice packs
  • Trash bag for easy cleanup
  • Hand sanitizer

Prepare for the Elements

Even if the forecast calls for sunshine, the weather can take a turn at the last minute. Stay ready for any conditions by packing items such as:

  • Sunscreen
  • Sun hat
  • Sunglasses
  • Umbrella or rain poncho
  • Insect repellent

Plan for Fun

A picnic can include more than just food. Bring along park-friendly activities to enjoy, like a deck of cards, board games or a good book. Explore the area by taking a walk and packing binoculars for bird-watching.

Stay Aware

Always be respectful of nature when picnicking. Keep these Leave No Trace Principles in mind:

  • Be familiar with Oakland County Parks rules and read park maps.
  • Stay on designated park trails at all times for your safety and the integrity of natural spaces.
  • Always use pet waste bags, trash and recycling cans and bathroom facilities provided in convenient locations across the park system.
  • Please take pictures and memories of natural spaces but don’t leave with flowers, seeds, mushrooms or other pieces of nature.
  • Don’t approach or feed wild animals and encourage pets to do the same.
  • Keep the parks beautiful and serene for all visitors.
