Independence Day is approaching, and communities are preparing to celebrate with spectacular fireworks displays. Grab your comfiest blanket, pack a picnic basket full of your favorite treats and prepare for an evening of oohs and ahs as rockets burst into brilliant colors.

Important Fireworks Safety Tips

To ensure a safe and enjoyable holiday for everyone, the National Safety Council recommends leaving fireworks to the professionals. If you plan to use consumer fireworks at home, follow these basic safety rules:

  • Never let young children hold fireworks. Older children should be monitored closely. Sparklers can get hot enough to melt metals and cause injuries.
  • Never lean any part of your body directly over a firework when lighting the fuse.
  • Do not point or throw fireworks at anyone.
  • Keep a bucket of water or a garden hose nearby in case of a fire.
  • If a firework does not light, never try to relight it or pick it up. Instead, soak it with water.
  • After a firework finishes burning, spray it with water before putting it in the trash to prevent a garbage fire.
  • Never use fireworks while impaired by alcohol or substances.
