Important Fireworks Safety Tips
To ensure a safe and enjoyable holiday for everyone, the National Safety Council recommends leaving fireworks to the professionals. If you plan to use consumer fireworks at home, follow these basic safety rules:
- Never let young children hold fireworks. Older children should be monitored closely. Sparklers can get hot enough to melt metals and cause injuries.
- Never lean any part of your body directly over a firework when lighting the fuse.
- Do not point or throw fireworks at anyone.
- Keep a bucket of water or a garden hose nearby in case of a fire.
- If a firework does not light, never try to relight it or pick it up. Instead, soak it with water.
- After a firework finishes burning, spray it with water before putting it in the trash to prevent a garbage fire.
- Never use fireworks while impaired by alcohol or substances.
