Juneteenth is a celebration of freedom, resilience, and the enduring strength of the Black community. Also known as Freedom Day, June 19 marks the day in 1865 when Major General Gordon Granger arrived in Texas to officially enforce the Emancipation Proclamation from two years earlier, declaring the official end of slavery.
In commemoration of the 161st anniversary of Juneteenth, Oakland County invites residents and visitors to honor this legacy by participating in local celebrations, educational gatherings, and commemorative events.
