Karema DeJesus knew she wanted to combine the two abiding passions of her life: her religious faith with her desire to help people get and stay healthy.
After living in Pontiac most of her life, she decided that a fitness club on the main street of the historic downtown could help her realize her dream.
“It is a community here, and people want a space where they feel safe and supported,” she said after a recent class at The Fitness Hub on North Saginaw in downtown Pontiac. “A lot of people don’t hear ‘Yes you can’ at home. But they know they can get those words of encouragement here.”
Mixed with the spirituality born of her ministry at the Light of the World Church, The Fitness Hub opened eight years ago and operates under the philosophy that you can create a more fulfilling life when both physical and spiritual well-being are strong and in balance.
After eight years at her studio in Pontiac, she’s hopeful the rebirth in the city’s downtown will help her grow her loyal client base.
“I have great expectations that this transition is going to bring life and activity downtown,” she said. “It shows movement, and with movement, things can happen. Being in the center of it all is a good thing for us.”
She has plenty of wonderful memories of enjoying concerts at the Phoenix Center, but is ready to reframe the shape of the city.
“You have to tear some things down to build them up, and that’s when business starts happening,” DeJesus said. “And we’re going to see good things happening in Pontiac.”
