Juneteenth isn’t just a date on the calendar. It’s a powerful echo of freedom, resilience, and the enduring spirit of people. Also known as Freedom Day, June 19 marks the anniversary of when Major General Gordon Granger traveled to Texas, the last state that wasn’t enforcing the Emancipation Proclamation signed by President Abraham Lincoln, to officially declare the end of slavery.
Formally recognized as a federal holiday in 2021, Juneteenth has been unofficially observed in communities across the county for years with celebrations that are vibrant testaments to history, culture and progress.
