Archery can help build strength and improve concentration. It boosts hand-eye coordination, enhances upper body strength and increases confidence. Not only does Oakland County Parks offer archery classes and camps but it also provides rental equipment and free range visits at Independence Oaks County Park.
“Archery is a great sport for beginners and virtually all ages and abilities,” Nathaniel Brech, recreation program coordinator at Oakland County Parks, pointed out. “It’s very calm, very easygoing, and only takes consistency to improve.”
Archery Classes
Oakland County Parks offers beginner and intermediate archery sessions for all ages/abilities during spring and summer, though classes are designed for ages eight and older. Each six-week class has a specific focus with drills to refine skills and games to keep archers on their toes.
Equipment is provided at the range, but archers can use their own equipment, except for crossbows.

Beginner Archery
Beginner Archery is a great introduction to archery as a sport. Archers spend an hour on the range every week learning about fundamentals, safety and competition.
This six-week course meets from 5:30-6:30 p.m. Tuesdays only. Cost is $75 per session. Three sessions are offered in 2024:

Archery Programming
Oakland County Parks offers additional archery programming for all ages and abilities. Onsite instructors are trained to assist children, older adults and people with disabilities. Our offerings include Archery 101, Adults Only Archery, Monster Mayhem and Archery Birthday Parties.
Archery 101
Learn basic archery instruction and enjoy shooting time at the range. Instructors will be on site at Independence Oaks on May 11 and Sept. 28 from 10 a.m.-noon. All equipment is included. This program is open to ages 8 and older and costs $15 per person.

Adults Only Archery Shoot
Adult participants can learn the basics of archery with qualified instructors on June 29 and July 27 from 10 a.m.-noon. All equipment is included. This program is open to ages 18 and older and costs$15 per person. To register, call 248-858-0906.
Monster Mayhem
Have fun shooting at 3D zombies and other monstrous targets on Aug. 24 and Oct. 5 from 1-2:30 p.m. General archery instruction will be provided at the archery range in Independence Oaks County Park. All equipment is included. This program is open to all ages and abilities with each session limited to 16 participants. The cost is $10 per person.

Archery Birthday Parties
Archery range birthday parties offer a fun, outdoor celebration option for ages 8 and older. Package includes range time, themed craft and celebration time after the range (total time 2.5 hours). Tent and picnic tables are provided; guests must provide their own birthday party supplies. Targets will be decorated based on one of the following themes:
- Zombie
- Art
- Superheroes
There is a maximum of 10 archers per party with a cost of $20 per participant. The range will be closed in the event of rain, thunder or lightning for guest safety.

Apply to Teach Archery
Oakland County Parks is now hiring a recreation worker and recreation assistant. In addition to their other duties, these employees will assist on the archery range, introducing people of all ages and abilities to the sport.
