After decades of tumultuous struggle, the United Nations commemorated March 8 as International Women’s Day in 1975.
At the same time, the California Education Task Force of the Sonoma County Commission on the Status of Women created a Women’s History Week celebration in 1978. The organizers chose the week of March 8 to promote International Women’s Day. Soon after, women’s groups and historians, led by the National Women’s History Project (now the National Women’s History Alliance), lobbied for national recognition. In February 1980, President Jimmy Carter declared the Week of March 8 National Women’s History Week. Seven years later, Congress renamed it National Women’s History Month.
