Important Alert: Watch for Fake Permit Payment Scams

The FBI is warning residents and businesses about a new scam aimed at people applying for planning and zoning permits. These messages can look very convincing. Scammers pose as local government staff and may include real property details, case numbers, and even the names of actual officials.

They often ask for payment through wire transfer, apps, or cryptocurrency, and may pressure you by warning of delays.

Take a moment before you act. Even if an email looks official, do not assume it is real. Check the sender’s email address closely, and avoid using any contact details listed in the message. Instead, go to your local government’s official website or call a verified number to confirm any fees.

If something feels off, trust that instinct.

Report suspicious messages to the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center and share as many details as you can.
