Severe Weather Awareness Week 2026: Are You Prepared?

Michigan’s Severe Weather Awareness Week runs March 15–21, 2026, and includes a Statewide Tornado Drill on Wednesday, March 18 at 1 p.m. This initiative helps educate residents about tornadoes, flooding, thunderstorms and high winds, while encouraging everyone to be prepared for severe weather emergencies. We are sharing on our social platforms this week about what to do in the event of severe weather.

We encourage everyone to “Know Your Plan” and take time to review emergency procedures with your family and co-workers. Know the warning signs of severe weather, develop your emergency plan and decide ahead of time how your family members will communicate if they become separated. Stay informed by monitoring local weather forecasts and alerts. A good way to stay informed is to sign up for OakAlert.

Tornadoes are the biggest threat in Oakland County. Michigan saw 33 tornadoes last year. The following are some tornado safety reminders:

At Home
  • If a tornado warning is issued, go to your basement immediately.
  • If you do not have a basement, go to a small interior room on the lowest level, such as a closet or bathroom, away from windows.
At Work or School
  • Follow your tornado drill procedures and proceed calmly to the designated tornado shelter area.
  • Stay away from windows and avoid taking shelter in large open areas such as cafeterias, gymnasiums, or auditoriums.
Outdoors
  • Seek shelter in a sturdy building immediately if a tornado is approaching.
  • Sheds, garages, storage facilities, mobile homes and tents are not safe.
In a Vehicle
  • Vehicles are not safe during a tornado. If possible, drive to the nearest sturdy shelter.
  • If you cannot reach shelter, either get down in your vehicle and cover your head or leave the vehicle and lie in a low-lying area such as a ditch or ravine.

Please take this opportunity to review your safety plans and encourage your family, friends and neighbors to prepare for severe weather.
