Navigating the Skies: A Conversation with Oakland County International Airport Manager Cheryl Bush

In celebration of Women of Aviation Worldwide Week, hear from Cheryl Bush, the Manager of the Oakland County International Airport (OCIA). With 47 years of experience, she is a testament to where hard work, mentorship, and a passion for the “tight-knit” aviation community can lead.

A Day in the Life at Michigan’s Second Busiest Airport

You might be surprised to learn that OCIA is the second busiest airport in Michigan, following Detroit Metro. Despite its status as a general aviation hub, it operates under the same rigorous federal and state regulations as major commercial airports.

“The airport is always a dynamic place,” Bush said. “My day is comprised of meeting with stakeholders, managing infrastructure planning, and working with federal agencies on certifications. From budgeting to community relations regarding noise inquiries, every day is unique.”

Finding the “Spark”

Bush didn’t always have her sights set on the skies.

“I wasn’t aware of the opportunities back then. As soon as I started my first job here, I was hooked,” she said. “I had a terrific mentor from day one who supported me more than anyone could dream of.”

Today, she finds reward in the airport’s global impact. Her work spans from facilitating private business travel to supporting international rescue missions and flights for critically ill patients.

Advice for the Next Generation

For young women looking to enter the field, Bush believes the biggest hurdle is often internal.

“It’s about believing in yourself and exuding confidence in your proven capabilities,” she said. “It’s not just about being a pilot or a mechanic. Don’t limit your sights—learn every part of the industry you can, and you will become invaluable.”

Leading with Pride

Reflecting on Women of Aviation Worldwide Week, Bush said, “If I can be an inspiration to young girls starting out, then I consider myself a success. I’m an example of someone who started with a dream and, through hard work and a tremendous team, is truly living it out.”
