Honoring the Legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. in Oakland County

On Monday, Jan. 19, Oakland County joins the nation in honoring the life and legacy of Dr. Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. We embrace this day as a “day on, not a day off.” It’s a time to reflect on the values of equality, justice and community service that Dr. King championed throughout his life.

In his “I’ve Been to the Mountaintop” speech, Dr. King issued a powerful call to action:

“The question is not, ‘If I stop to help this man in need, what will happen to me?’ The question is, ‘If I do not to stop to help… what will happen to them?’ That is the question.”

In the spirit of that selflessness, Oakland County encourages residents to engage through service and education. Whether you are participating in a local march, attending a commemorative breakfast, or volunteering, your involvement helps strengthen communities. Municipalities across the county have scheduled observations that offer residents of all ages the opportunity to learn about the Civil Rights Movement.

We have compiled a list of MLK Day observations taking place across Oakland County.
