Enjoy Adaptive Recreation through Fall and Winter

Outdoor adventures are a great way to appreciate the changing season and Adaptive Recreation at Oakland County Parks offers exciting programs, accessible facilities, and adaptive equipment rentals for individuals with physical and cognitive disabilities across our parks.

Explore the winding trails of Independence Oaks County Park during an Adaptive Cycling session, a one-hour tour that includes the use of an adaptive bicycle. Get your adrenaline pumping as you discover the rugged trails of Holly Oaks ORV Park during an off-roading ride on Disability Dirt Day on Sunday, Oct. 19!

Fallin’ Into Fun is on Friday, Sept. 26 at Addison Oaks County Park. This free, family-friendly event designed for folks with disabilities will include an accessible wagon ride, cider, donuts and crafts. Preregistration for this event is required.

Teens (16+) and adults with disabilities are invited to Halloween Happiness on Wednesday, Oct. 22 at the Southfield Civic Center for a spooktacular time including music, dancing, trick-or-treating, carnival games and a pizza party.

The holiday fun will continue with the Jingle Bell Ball on Thursday, Dec. 11 and Friday, Dec. 12 at the Waterford Oaks Event Center. Enjoy music, dancing, a visit from Santa, and a pizza party.

Practice basic sports skills like running, kicking and throwing during the Special Olympics Young Athletes Program! This free, eight-week program is designed for children, ages 2-7, with or without disabilities and is a great way for kids to make new friends and develop essential skills. Looking for a new fishing or kayaking spot? Groveland Oaks (open until Oct. 6) offers excellent fishing on Stewart Lake and features a new, accessible fishing dock. Addison Oaks and Independence Oaks also feature accessible boat launches for kayaks.

Hoping to find more adventure on land? Paved trails through forests and native fields have been created at Addison Oaks, Groveland Oaks, Independence Oaks, Lyon Oaks and Waterford Oaks county parks, allowing you to focus on sightseeing during your hike rather than navigating difficult terrain.
