Many residents and visitors are flocking to Oakland County this summer to play at the parks, wade in the lakes and hike trails. Before heading out, make sure you are prepared for everything that may happen outdoors. This is part 1 of the summertime safety series – first aid kits.

Keeping your first-aid kit well-stocked can help you respond faster and more effectively to common injuries and emergencies. When you leave home for beaches or parks, pack a first-aid kit. Ready-made can be purchased, or you may create your own based on your family’s needs. A first-aid kit might include:

  • Flashlight and extra batteries
  • Emergency space blanket
  • Portable phone charger
  • Disposable non-latex gloves and surgical mask/ mouth barrier
  • Dressings/ bandages and (gauze roll, sterile gauze pads, eye pad, elastic bandage, sterile cotton balls and swabs)
  • Bandage strips and “butterfly” bandages in assorted sizes
  • Triangular bandage or piece of cloth to create a sling
  • Super glue
  • Safety pins and medical tape
  • Instant cold packs
  • Scissors and tweezers
  • Thermometer
  • Rubber tourniquet
  • Hand sanitizer and alcohol wipes
  • Antiseptic solution and towelettes
  • Sterile saline for irrigation
  • Antibiotic ointment, calamine lotion and hydrocortisone cream

Make it a habit to check the expiration dates of medications.
