Due to wildfires in Quebec and Ontario, Canada, the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE) has declared June 8-10 at midnight to be Clean Air Action days. High levels of tiny particles, called PM2.5, are in the air in southeast Michigan counties, including Oakland County.
Michigan EGLE recommends people with heart or lung disease, older adults, children, and teens take these precautions:
- Avoid strenuous outdoor activities.
- Keep outdoor activities short.
- Choose to take physical activities indoors or reschedule them.
- Continue to visit https://fire.airnow.gov/ to check the air quality in your zip code.
Fire Safety
While campfires are always fun this time of year, remember, fire safety is everyone’s responsibility. Here are guidelines to follow when building bonfires, according to Oakland County’s Emergency Management & Homeland Division:
- Always have a water source nearby.
- Never leave a fire unattended, even for a minute
- Keep a metal shovel and bucket ready.
- Completely put out fires with water every time.
- Do NOT burn on windy days or during dry weather.
