Labor Day Events in Oakland County

Though the summer is coming to a close and schools will soon be in session, there are still plenty of fun activities for the whole family to enjoy! On Labor Day weekend, Americans across the country will be enjoying a break from work to celebrate America’s workforce and the American Labor Movement.

Looking to get outside and enjoy the fresh air? Try the 11th Annual Labor Day Bridge Walk and Run in Rochester! In the mood to pursue some fine art, sample tasty treats, and rock out? Arts, Beats, and Eats festival in Royal Oak will host their annual Juried Fine Art show, while offering food from 40 local restaurants and have over 200 musical performances across nine stages. The Michigan Renaissance Festival in Holly will take you back to the time of knights, castles, and more. There are activities for everyone this Labor Day weekend!

Tigers on the Wind: A Swallowtail Soirée

WILDER SIDE OF OAKLAND COUNTY

The Eastern Tiger Swallowtail (Papilio glaucus) is one of the most elegant butterfly species that flutters above the meadows and flower gardens of Oakland County. They are not as much of a “media-hog” as our milkweed loving monarch butterflies, nor do they undertake long border crossing migrations, but as for their visibility in these waning days of August—the beautiful swallowtails win hands down.

Don’t get me wrong. I like monarchs and often attend our local monarch butterfly festivals, but our “tigers on the wind,” the eastern tiger swallowtails, barely get a public notice even with their nearly five-inch wing spans. Perhaps they should, for they are appearing in the urban areas of Novi, Pontiac, Royal Oak and Rochester, and as to be expected they are fluttering about rural fields and the wide open spaces of our Huron-Clinton Metro Parks, Oakland County Parks, and the expansive State Recreation Areas managed by the Michigan Department of Natural Resources. It’s almost impossible to hike or bike down the Paint Creek, Polly Ann or Clinton River Trails on a sunny day without taking note of their mesmerizing appearance on trailside wildflowers. With those thoughts in mind, and no disrespect meant to the monarch lovers (count me among them) here’s a snapshot salute to the swallowtails, for in the world of nature all things are connected. Find a Farm in Oakland County

Fresh, seasonal produce can be found locally throughout the 25,000 acres of farmland in Oakland County. From Spring, Summer, and Fall look for fresh fruits and vegetables like asparagus, berries, corn, apples, and pumpkins-some you can even pick yourself! You can also find local alpaca wool, dairy, honey, and meat from local farms. Visit a farm stand, u-pick farm, or Community Supported Agriculture location to find fresh produce for you and your family to enjoy while supporting local farmers. Use our interactive map or list to find one near you.

Check out the Long Family Farm in Commerce for a taste of their ripe sweet corn, travel to the beautiful Middleton Berry Farm in Ortonville to pick a few berries on your own, or head on over to Guernsey Farms Dairy, in Northville, for flavorful ice cream! In addition, many of the farms allow day trips and visits for kids to learn all about what goes on in and around the barnyard.
