With so many things to love about spring, runners and walkers can all agree that it’s a wonderful time to get back outside. Fresh air, added sunlight, and the beauty of spring blooms all make a positive impact on our moods.

Take a look at our list of Spring Running Events and sign up for a race today! You’ll find events for every ability, including full marathons, mile walks, fun runs, and more. Setting a goal now can be a great motivation as you begin the season. If you need help getting started, check out the Brooksie Way Training program which kicks off on March 22nd and is suited for all levels of ability.

Are you ready to set out for a walk, jog, or long distance run? Spring temperatures can fluctuate quickly and don’t forget about precipitation. Be sure to follow these simple tips for safe running.

  • Check the weather before you head out
  • Warm up – especially when temps are cooler
  • Invest in proper footwear
  • Run during daylight hours when possible
  • Use a running light, like an illuminated vest, headlamp, or waist light when dark
  • Dress in layers

Chaotic Harmony on the Dawn of a New Year

WILDER SIDE OF OAKLAND COUNTY

The wilds of nature on a frigid sunny day can be a magical place. Red squirrels leap from low branches and tunnel under snow. Red-tailed hawks perch on tree limbs above frozen marshes, perhaps waiting for the tempting movement of rabbits. Rivers flow and shoreline ice sparkles and crackles. That was nature’s welcome to me on the first day of the New Year. I breathed deeply from the evergreen scented air and headed for a large stand of towering red pine trees that were planted in neat orderly rows during the Great Depression. The pines created an image very much unlike what one expects in wild nature; yet to the naturalist spirit within me, they beckoned to be explored. Continue reading

Spread Warmth this Winter with Coats for the Cold

The warmth of your generosity could help those less-fortunate this winter. The Oakland County Sheriff’s Office is accepting donations of new or clean, used coats through November 30th as part of their 30th annual “Coats for the Cold” coat drive.

Donated coats will be sent to a variety of local charitable organizations, who in turn distribute the coats to community members most in need.
