2023 Black History Month Events in Oakland County

February is Black History Month! To learn more about Black history and culture, or gain awareness of the past, check out our list of events being held including musical and dance performances, interactive workshops, and more throughout the month of February in and around Oakland County.

This originally began as Negro History Week in 1926. In 1976, following the Civil Rights movement, the weekly observance transformed into a month-long celebration. Since then, every U.S. president has issued a proclamation honoring the spirit of Black History Month.

Radon Test Kits Half Off During the Month of January

In honor of January being National Radon Action Month, Oakland County encourages residents to take action and test their homes for radon by offering radon test kits half-price ($5) all month.

What is radon you ask? Radon is a naturally occurring invisible, odorless, and tasteless gas that is usually harmless outdoors. It is the leading cause of lung cancer in non-smokers and the second leading cause of lung cancer overall.

The Woodward Dream Cruise is Cruisin’ in to Oakland County

Get ready to rumble, Oakland County! The world’s largest one-day automotive celebration, bringing in over 1.5 million people and 40,000 classic cars from around the world to Oakland County, the Woodward Dream Cruise, is rolling back into town Saturday, August 20th. Travel along the 16-mile stretch of Woodward Avenue from Pontiac to Ferndale, and cruise through nine Oakland County communities: Berkley, Birmingham, Bloomfield Hills, Bloomfield Township, Ferndale, Huntington Woods, Pleasant Ridge, Pontiac and Royal Oak.

The Dream Cruise is a free, family-friendly event that has plenty to offer car owners, auto enthusiasts, and fans of all ages. Spectators can line up along the cruising route or even cruise with the classics, although those not driving a classic car are asked to stay out of the two right lanes to keep a clear view for the spectators. There will also be many restaurants and pop-up events scattered across the cruising route. In addition, bands and musicians will perform on the Rock’n Live Entertainment Stage on Friday and Saturday in Ferndale and a Kid’s Inflatable Zone and Face Painting will be available in Berkley.

Patriot Week 2019 in Oakland County

The 10th Anniversary of Patriot Week

During Patriot Week, the imagination and support of citizens across the nation is captured and celebrated. The 10th anniversary of Patriot Week will be celebrated by honoring America’s First Principles, Founding Fathers and other Patriots, vital documents and speeches, and flags that make America the greatest nation in world history. Patriot Week begins on September 11th, honoring the nearly 3,000 Americans who lost their lives in 2001, and ends on September 17th, Constitution Day.

Co-created by Oakland County Circuit Court Judge Michael Warren and his then 10-year-old daughter in 2009, Patriot Week is a time to reflect upon the idealsdocuments, and historical figures that represent the best of the United States. Special events ranging from solemn remembrances and discussions to lively celebrations, lectures, and presentations have been scheduled throughout Patriot Week and beyond.
