Oakland County Commissioners Partner with 4-H to Host 2018 Youth in Government Day this Spring

This coming May, high school students from across Oakland County will participate in the Oakland County Board of Commissioners’ annual Youth in Government Day. The event focuses on encouraging young people to better understand, engage with, and participate in local government. Eligible students will even have the opportunity to register to vote!

Following in the footsteps of last year’s successful event, Youth in Government Day will once again focus on two important aspects of helping Oakland County students become more active, informed, and influential citizens: critical thinking and developing a broader understanding of the many ways local government impacts daily life.

Excitement for Everyone at the Oakland County Fair

Excitement soars as the 2017 Oakland County Fair prepares for its grand opening at Springfield Oaks County Park in Davisburg. The fair, which opens July 7th and runs through July 16th, is presented by Oakland County Parks and features a wide range of 4-H events, musical acts, and amusement park thrills.

Wristbands and tickets are available online and at the gate. Tickets grant visitors access to all areas of the fair: from the roller coasters to the racing pigs.

Youth in Government Day Invites Oakland County Students to Learn Importance of Civic Engagement

Next Monday, high school students from across Oakland County will descend upon the Oakland County Government campus to be immersed in a day of local government activities led by various public servants and elected officials. During this year’s annual Youth In Government Day, hosted by the Oakland County Board of Commissioners on May 15th, students will learn the importance of civic engagement and how they can participate in the politics and policies that impact their lives and communities.

“This event is a great opportunity for area youth to experience first-hand how local government operates and to interact with many of the elected officials that contribute to making Oakland County one of the best run in the country,” said Board Vice Chairman Michael Spisz. “We have worked closely with our partners, including MSU Extension 4-H, the Sheriff’s Office and others, to make this year’s program interactive and engaging. Roadside Wildflowers of July

WILDER SIDE OF OAKLAND COUNTY

They are wild and free. They choose where to grow. They need no care from us, just a bit of respect to survive. Some are native species, others invasive or naturalized, but the wildflowers of our July roadsides share common traits. They thrive in disturbed soils and open areas and add colorful beauty to the road’s edge. They are the vanguard forces of nature trying to make things right!

Butterfly Weed: The brilliant orange blossom of Butterfly Weed is unmistakable for appreciative humans, and nectar sipping butterflies. It’s next to impossible to hike in an uncut meadow or prairie without encountering the most stunning member of the milkweed family. The meadows and roadside of Highland State Recreation Area, and the roadside edge of Independence Oaks County Park-North are just two locations where they are now at peak bloom.
