Have a Winter Blast with Outdoor Activities!

Take advantage of winter days when the mercury falls (or rises) to just the right temperature and head outside for some winter fun! There’s so much to enjoy about the cold season in Oakland County. Take a look at our interactive map or check out our Play Outside this Winter page for lists of sledding, ice skating, skiing, ice fishing, and snowmobiling locations.

Staying active in the winter is good idea for everyone! Exercise increases endorphins, relieves stress, provides energy, and brightens a bad mood – all great reasons to check out our map and plan your winter adventure.

Remember to bundle up and use the American Academy of Pediatrics’ tips on Keeping Kids Warm and Safe Winter Sports and Activities. Many of these tips apply to teens and adults too. Visit their webpage for the full list before you head out on your next winter adventure.

  • Dress infants and children warmly for outdoor activities.  Several thin layers will keep them dry and warm. Always remember warm boots, gloves or mittens, and a hat.
  • The rule of thumb for older babies and young children is to dress them in one more layer of clothing than an adult would wear in the same conditions.
  • Set reasonable time limits on outdoor play to prevent hypothermia and frostbite. Have children come inside periodically to warm up.

We hope you enjoy the winter season in Oakland County and take advantage of the wonderful outdoor opportunities. Don’t forget to have some delicious hot cocoa when you come in from the cold and remember that spring will be here before we know it!
