Take Time to Honor the Fallen this Memorial Day

Every story is different. From WWII and Vietnam to Iraq and Afghanistan, every veteran’s experience is unique, yet equally important.

As they recount their memories, they remember friends who didn’t return home. Friends who weren’t able to hug their families or hold their kids one more time. It’s those friends, fighters that we remember on Memorial Day.

Honor these brave military men, women and K-9’s at any number of Memorial Day community events around Oakland County, in addition to your neighborhood barbecue.

This time of year, you will see communities come out in full force to support America’s bravest. Honoring those who fought and lost their lives, while celebrating the bravery of all veterans and active duty military.

So many decked out in red, white and blue at local parades, ceremonies and other events. American flags can be seen rippling in the wind. Taps can be heard echoing in a silent crowd and so many can be seen marching mainstreets across Oakland County. Motorcycle engines rev in parade processions and a slight chatter can be heard from surrounding crowds. It’s undoubtedly an emotional, yet proud day for America.

While it is a day to remember those that we have lost, it’s also a day to celebrate their lives. The brave lives they led and the example they set for the rest of us.

Our local communities have set a high standard for Memorial Day events with the Greater Rochester Memorial Day parade, the Novi Memorial Day Run/Walk or the Great Lakes National Cemetery ceremony in Holly, just to name a few. Before you get out the barbecue and entertain guests, make sure to remember the fallen and thank a veteran. Without them, we wouldn’t be able to enjoy the simple freedoms that we love on this day.
