Farmers Markets in Oakland County (2014 Edition)

Farmers Market

Why shop at a farmers market?

According to the MSU Extension, “The state’s food and agricultural system generates $91.4 billion in economic activity each year”.

Sounds like it’s good for the economy.

They also said that “Michigan is the leading producer of dry beans and several varieties of annual flowers, including geraniums and petunias, and Easter lilies. We’re also No. 1 in the nation in production of blueberries, cucumbers for pickles, Niagara grapes and tart cherries.  Michigan produces more than 300 commodities on a commercial basis, making the state second only to California in agricultural diversity”.

Sounds like it’s good for variety.

There are countless other reasons, like helping the environment to meeting the people who grow your food and the connection with your community that you feel when go outdoors and stroll amidst freshly grown fruits, vegetables and flowers.

That sounds good for you, doesn’t it.

But we think that food just tastes better coming from the farm to the table in the shortest time frame.

In some of today’s farmers markets, there can be a wide range of educational and entertainment activities for both kids and adults in addition to the fresh food.

Many Oakland County communities have farmers markets, and some combine the market with other activities or special events, including flower day’s, art fairs and flea markets. (You will need to check their websites for future events)

Most are open from May until October.

If you are visiting a market for the first time, check with the market website for current times and dates open.

The MSU Extension has created a handy Michigan Availability Guide so you can know which popular items are in season throughout the year.
